When: June 16-19
Where: Salt Lake City
Who: Four NAU Photo Students
Why: Capture Action/Candid/Feature/Group photos
What: A 36-hour running race needs marketing photos
Details: Ragnar Relay, an overnight running relay race company, wants NAU students to capture photos of the racers in the beautiful mountains outside of Salt Lake City.
There are over 1000 teams of 12 runners each that all start running a 200 mile race on Friday, Jun 17. Start times are spread out from 6am-3pm so the athletes are spread out on the course. They all finish sometime on Saturday.
Two photographers will be positioned at the start line on Friday to capture team photos and candid photos of the athletes as they head out. The other photographers will be roaming the course getting action photos and feature photos at the many locations where runners exchange the baton to the next teammate.
When the start line photographers are finished, all four photographers will need to get together and shoot sunset, twilight, and night shots on the course.
Before getting a little sleep, all four photographers will need to do a quick edit of their top shots and have a slideshow ready to show at the finish line on several TVs.
On Saturday, the photographers will trade roles as two photographers take shots of each team at the finish line and two photographers roam the course finding great candid shots. The last team will finish around 7pm on Saturday.
After the event is over, everyone will finally get to relax. On Sunday we will need to organize images into folders based on where the images were captured and on Monday we will need to overnight the images to Ragnar.
After the event, every team will get a free digital copy of their finish shot. Ragnar will use the remaining images in brochures and on their website.
Photographers will own their respective copyright and images, Ragnar will be licensed to use the photos in web and print for advertising and marketing.
Flights, hotels and a rental car will be provided. If all goes as planned, we will be shooting 17 events a year, earning a paid commission and earning school credit.
